OUTDOOR SURFACES

Outdoor Surfaces We Tile Across Sydney

From a covered alfresco behind the house to a front driveway or a pool deck, we handle every outdoor tiling application using the right materials for the job.

Alfresco Areas

Covered entertaining spaces that get heavy foot traffic year-round. We lay slip-rated pavers with correct falls to keep water away from the house and off the surface.

Patios and Pergolas

Open patios cop full UV and rain. We select materials rated for your specific exposure and build the substrate correctly so the tiles last without lifting or cracking.

Balconies

Residential and apartment balconies above ground level need an AS 3740 waterproofing membrane under the tile before anything else. We install, certify, and tile in one scope.

Pool Decks and Surrounds

Pool areas need R11 slip-rated tiles, UV resistance, and proper drainage away from the pool edge. We work with travertine, porcelain pavers, and bluestone for this application.

BBQ Benches and Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor kitchen benchtops and splashbacks need tiles that handle heat, grease, and moisture. We tile these in porcelain or stone formats that clean up easily and hold their finish.

Driveways

Large-format porcelain and cobblestone driveways for residential properties. We set the substrate for vehicle loads and use formats from classic cobblestone to clean 600x600mm pavers.

Front Entries and Pathways

First impressions matter. We tile front entries and garden pathways in formats from classic tessellated patterns to contemporary large-format porcelain that frames a home beautifully.

Verandahs and Porches

Period homes with tessellated tile verandahs or Federation porches get careful matching, restoration, or full replacement in a sympathetic pattern that suits the architecture.

CRAFT WORK, NOT JUST TILING

Outdoor Tiling Is a Different Job

Indoor tiles sit in a controlled environment. Outdoor tiles take a sustained beating: UV from Sydney summers, temperature swings, frost in western and southern suburbs, salt air near the harbour, heavy foot traffic, and water that has nowhere to go if the drainage is wrong.

Every outdoor tile must carry the right slip rating for its application (R10 minimum for dry areas, R11 for pool surrounds and consistently wet zones). The substrate needs correctly calculated drainage falls, typically 10-15mm per metre, so water runs toward a drain or off the edge rather than pooling under the tile.

Expansion joints are required at all perimeters, movement joints across large areas, and at any existing slab joint. Without them, seasonal thermal movement cracks both tiles and grout lines.

This is craft work. The wrong contractor will save money on substrate preparation and charge you twice when the tiles lift in the first Sydney summer.

MATERIALS

Materials Built for Sydney's Climate

Sydney summers push surface temperatures above 40°C. Western and southern suburbs see light frosts in winter. The materials we specify are tested and rated for this range. We do not use interior tiles outdoors.

Porcelain Pavers

The most versatile outdoor tile. Slip-rated to R11 as standard, UV-stable, frost-resistant, and available in 20mm thickness for high-traffic and vehicle applications. Formats range from 400x400mm up to 800x800mm. The go-to material for alfresco areas, patios, and pool decks across Sydney.

Travertine and Natural Stone

Premium look for pool surrounds, feature areas, and high-end entertaining spaces. Travertine is naturally slip-resistant and stays cooler underfoot than dark porcelain in summer. Requires sealing every few years to resist staining. We use honed or brushed finishes outdoors for grip.

Cobblestone and Bluestone

Heritage character for driveways, front entries, and garden pathways. Bluestone is a Sydney classic with proven durability in the local climate. Cobblestone suits traditional Federation and Victorian homes. Both are set in a sand-cement bed with proper cross-falls for drainage.

Large-Format Outdoor Porcelain

For a minimalist, contemporary look with fewer grout lines. Available in formats from 600x600mm up to 1000x1000mm and even 600x1200mm. These larger pavers require a perfectly flat substrate and the right adhesive system, which is where tradespeople who skip substrate prep come unstuck.

SUBSTRATE AND DRAINAGE

Why Drainage Falls Make or Break an Outdoor Tile Job

Every outdoor tiled surface needs a slope toward a drain or off the edge of the slab. The typical fall is 1.0-1.5%, which is 10-15mm for every metre of tile. It sounds small. The consequences of getting it wrong are not.

Water that cannot drain pools on the surface. It sits in grout joints, works into the bedding layer, and in cooler weather it freezes and expands. That freeze-thaw cycle breaks the bond between the tile and the substrate. Tiles lift, crack, and within a year or 2 you are back to bare concrete.

On balconies and outdoor decks above ground level, the situation is more serious: water that gets under the tile reaches the structural slab and begins corroding the reinforcement. That is an expensive structural problem, not just an aesthetic one. A waterproofing membrane compliant with AS 3740 prevents this, and we install and certify these membranes on every above-ground tiled surface.

We set falls during substrate preparation, before any tile goes down. Once the tile is installed, falls cannot be adjusted. This is the step that contractors who rush the job skip, and the reason outdoor tile failures almost always start at the substrate, not the tile itself.

“Outdoor tiling is 80% substrate, 20% tile. Get the falls wrong and the prettiest tiles in Sydney won't save the job.”
