SHOWER REGROUTING SYDNEY

Shower Regrouting Sydney

A regrout can make a tired shower look close to new for a fraction of a renovation. It can also be a waste of your money if the waterproofing behind the tiles has already failed. We check which one you are dealing with before we quote.

The honest answer first

Grout Is Not What Keeps Water Out of Your Wall

This surprises most people, so it is worth saying plainly. Grout fills the gaps between tiles and keeps them stable. It is not a waterproof barrier and it never was. The thing that stops water reaching the timber and plasterboard behind your shower is the waterproofing membrane, which sits underneath the tiles and which you cannot see.

That distinction decides whether a regrout is a smart, cheap fix or money down the drain. If your grout looks tired but the membrane is doing its job, regrouting is one of the best value jobs in a bathroom. If water has already been tracking through a failed membrane, new grout hides the evidence for a few months while the damage behind the wall carries on.

We would rather tell you that up front and lose a small job than take your money for a fix that will not hold. After 28+ years of pulling apart Sydney bathrooms, we can usually tell the difference within a few minutes on site.

Which one is your shower

When a Regrout Fixes It, and When It Will Not

A regrout is the right fix

  • Grout is stained or discoloured but still firmly in place
  • Hairline cracks in the grout lines, tiles still solid
  • Surface mould in the joints that keeps coming back after cleaning
  • Silicone in the corners has gone black or is peeling away
  • Grout is powdery or crumbling in patches

In these cases you are looking at a 1 day job and a shower that looks close to new.

Something deeper is going on

  • Tiles sound hollow when tapped, or move under pressure
  • A damp patch or bubbling paint on the other side of the wall
  • Water pooling away from the drain or running outside the shower
  • A musty smell that does not clear with ventilation
  • The shower base or floor feels spongy underfoot

If you recognise these, the honest answer is usually a strip-out and new AS 3740 waterproofing, not a regrout.

How we do it

Our Regrouting Process

1

We look before we quote

We check whether the tiles are sound, tap for hollow spots, and look for signs the membrane has failed. This is the step most people skip, and it is the one that decides whether a regrout is money well spent.

2

Fixed-price quote in writing

You get one number covering the whole job. If we think a regrout will not solve your problem, we tell you that instead of quoting for it.

3

Old grout raked out

The existing grout is mechanically raked back to a consistent depth so the new grout has something to bond into. Joints are then vacuumed and cleaned.

4

Re-grout and re-silicone

New grout is worked into the joints and finished cleanly. Every movement joint, the corners and the floor-to-wall junction get fresh mould-resistant silicone.

5

Cure and clean-up

We clean the tiles down and leave the bathroom tidy. Give the grout and silicone about 24 hours before using the shower again.

What it costs

Shower Regrouting Costs in Sydney

Most standard shower regrouts in Sydney land between $650 and $1,200. What moves the number is the size of the shower, how much old grout has to come out, whether tiles need lifting and re-bedding, and how much silicone work the corners and floor junction need.

  • Fixed price agreed in writing before we start
  • No surprise variations once the job is underway
  • Mould-resistant silicone on every movement joint
  • Tiles cleaned down and bathroom left tidy
